Maya Lin Sugarman crafts imaginative sessions, grounded in knowledge.

Maya (she/they) is a fitness coach and yoga instructor who blends strength training with mindful movement. She leads sessions that energize, and help you move with more ease and confidence.

Maya’s powerlifting and yoga practice began in the spring of 2014, when she was 24 and processing the recent loss of her mother. Physical movement became a powerful medium for Maya to work through the early stages of grief.

Through strength training, Maya discovered a new sense of self-confidence that carried into her life outside the gym.

After a decade-long career as a journalist, Maya quit her job to pursue the independent work she always dreamed of. Most recently, she created the Apple Original podcast Magnificent Jerk. Throughout her career, physical movement has played an essential role in her creative process.

My own movement journey changed me in ways I never expected. I’m so excited to help with yours. Let’s discover your strength together through personal training.

Maya’s teaching philosophy

I see physical movement and resistance training as part of a larger whole. Be open to what your time in the gym can teach you about yourself.

All our bodies are unique, thus my practice is a partnered exploration between coach and client. I will continually ask how movements feel in your own body. You will challenge yourself, yet not at the cost of chronic pain.

I help clients feel more confident each time they step into the gym. I will teach you how to properly use equipment and perform key movement patterns, while always making it a point to celebrate your wins.

I hope to make exercise fun. As adults with busy lives, this is a rare opportunity. The gym should feel less like a chore or place of fear, and more like a space to play.
